MIAMI RIVER FISH MARKET

For this project we were to design a fish market on the bank of the Miami River. On the opposite side of the site is the historic Lummus Park. This created a unique situation where there were desirable views all around. I capitalized on this by designing an open structure inspired by a fish skeleton, allowing wide views, natural ventilation, and open access for the community. It includes market facilities as well as a restaurant. and boardwalk along the river.

The market’s roof was designed to provide shade to the occupants throughout the day while allowing lots of natural diffuse light in the space. The trees which were preexisting on the site were all kept to offer shade at the market entrances and to frame views to the river from the oncoming roads. Rainwater is also harvested from the roof and is stored in cisterns, purified, and reused to supplement water from the municipal supply
