PIER 54 TOWER
On the site of the historic Pier 54 in New York, we designed a 40-story tower to address the needs of the surrounding area and the growing young population of New York City. Located in the Meatpacking District directly on the water, the Pier 54 tower's mass was broken down in a way that it would not impose but be a modern complement to the area. The base matches the height of the surrounding buildings and the nearby Highline. It is populated by shopfronts flanking a large breezeway entrance to the 800-foot long pier platform beyond that was converted to sculpture park and outdoor event space.
At the top of the base where the building splits in two, is ample flex office space surrounded by an open outdoor terrace promoting working and collaboration for young entrepreneurs. the shorter slab-shaped tower houses a hotel. It's geometry references the NY slab tower typology popularised by Mies van der Rohe. The other tower references the NY skyscraper with its setback gradually increasing with height. This tower contains spacious artist's lofts for the aforementioned sculpture park and beyond, as well as student housing for NY's growing student population, and micro-apartments on top to house young professionals.
Amenity floors bridged between the two towers allows a host of functions such as gym, indoor winter garden and pool, conference, and study spaces to be shared saving space in the building.
